STATELESS INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

The denial of citizenship is a problem faced by many indigenous peoples. The denial of right to nationality directly affects their personal security and makes them extremely vulnerable. The lack of citizenship deprives them of other basic rights, such as the right to education, health care, employment, the right to use forests, water, land and other essential natural resources in a sustainable manner, the right to participate in development activities, the right to access to government facilities and services and the right to freedom of movement.

AITPN has been actively involved in the struggle for citizenship rights of the stateless indigenous Chakmas and Hajongs of Arunachal Pradesh.

AITPN has also been closely monitoring the citizenship application process of the stateless mountain peoples of northern Thailand.
